Investment Casting

Investment casting or ‘lost wax casting’ provides a shortcut to your finished precision parts without welding, excessive machining, or assembly. The process involves producing a wax pattern that matches the desired shape of the final cast product, which is then coated with a ceramic slurry. This process is repeated several times in order to build a laminated structure that enhances the mold’s strength and durability. Once the ceramic shell hardens, the wax is melted and removed, leaving a hollow ceramic mold. Molten metal is then poured into the mold, filling the cavity and taking the shape of the desired component. After the metal has solidified, the ceramic mold is broken away, revealing the finished product. Spectron’s investment casting processes include:

  • Furnace capacity includes two ovens for wax burnout (lost wax process) from the ceramic mold and four ovens for preheating ceramic shells.
  • Non-destructive Testing (NDT) including magnetic particle inspection, dye penetrant inspection, and digital X-ray is conducted in-house for tight control and quick identification of potential issues.
  • Secondary finishing services including machining, coatings and managing sub-assembly. View all Secondary Operations capabilities.
