What Is High-Pressure Die Casting?
High-pressure die casting is a versatile and efficient process for producing precision metal parts. By injecting molten aluminum, magnesium, or zinc alloys under high pressure into hardened steel molds (dies), we can achieve complex shapes, smooth surfaces, and consistent high quality results.
At Spectron Manufacturing, we leverage this process to create parts with sharp definition and tight tolerances, suitable for a variety of finishes and applications in industries ranging from automotive to consumer electronics.

Materials We Use
We routinely work with a broad range of non-ferrous materials to meet the needs of various industries. Each material offers unique properties, ensuring that we can meet the specific requirements of your application.
Common Materials Include:

Aluminum Alloys:
Known for their high strength-to-weight ratio, these alloys are ideal for lightweight, high-performance applications.

Zinc Alloys:
Offering excellent corrosion resistance and malleability, zinc alloys are perfect for parts that require fine details and strength.
Design Specifications
for High-Precision Die Casting
Our high-pressure die casting process enables tight tolerances, smooth finishes, and excellent repeatability. Here’s what you can expect:
Wall Thickness
Minimum wall thickness of .04″ (1mm) for zinc and .08″ (2mm) for aluminum alloys.
Surface Finish
Typical surface finish is Ra 63 micro-inch as cast; post-machining is available for higher quality finishes.
Tolerances
As cast tolerances per DIN ISO-2768T1-V/DIN ISO-2768T2-L tolerance standard ; post-machining available for even tighter tolerance requirements.
Draft Angles
Minimum draft of .5 degrees ensures smooth ejection from the mold without compromising part integrity.
Permanent Mold VS. High Pressure Die Casting:
Which Is Right for Your Project?
High-pressure die casting is best suited for high-volume production, offering rapid cycle times and the ability to create components with thin walls and intricate details. In contrast, permanent mold casting is preferred for larger, parts with thicker walls as well as lower quantity requirements which benefit most from a reduced upfront tooling investment.
| Permanent Mold Casting | High Pressure Die Casting | |
|---|---|---|
| Ideal for | Lower quantities, larger, complex internal geometries | Higher volume production, thinner wall parts |
| Metal Quality | Superior quality on thick walls or long runs | Excellent quality within parameters |
| Tooling Costs | Lower upfront cost | Higher upfront cost |
| Production Speed | Slower casting cycles / higher reoccurring costs | Faster casting cycles / lower reoccurring costs |
| Minimum Wall Thickness | Thicker .180” (4.5mm) typical | Thinner wall .080″ (2mm) typical |
